BemStudio | Characterization of Luminaires

To do the characterization of a luminaire is to know exactly how a luminaire performs. Luminaire characterization is done through a series of standardized tests that are performed either in an integrated sphere or in a goniophotometer. Integrating spheres are configured to accurately measure luminaire output as well as the color characteristics of the light source under test. The goniophotometers provide both near-field (luminance) and far-field (luminous intensity) data and are used for generating standard photometric data in the popular .ies and .ldt (EULUMDAT) formats for light designers that use software such as Dialux, Relux, Evo and Calculux.

Following up on BemStudio's previous blog post about Luminaire Characterization we want to provide even more information on this subject. Nevertheless, if you missed that blog post here is the link:

Luminaire Characterization - Understanding LED tests IES LM-79, LM-80, and TM-21.

The output characteristics of a luminaire describes the way in which a lighting fixture performs its main function. Among the most important parameters for evaluation a lighting fixture, is the way in which it distributes luminous intensity in a space. Usually, the distribution of luminous intensity in a space is represented graphically by means of a photometric curve or three dimensionally with a photometric solid. The photometric curve represents the principle identity card of a fixture: through its careful analysis it is possible to evaluate whether a fixture responds adequately to the role for which it was designed.

The lighting and luminaire industry has been undergoing dynamic changes. With the trend towards more energy-efficient products and conflicting product claims around LED products in particular, verification testing is more important now than ever. Confusing and misleading claims have led to suspicion among businesses and consumers, particularly when some claims have not met expectations. BemStudio's Luminaire Characterization helps its manufacturing customers leverage testing to understand customer expectations about a product’s performance, clear up confusion around product claims, and better understand testing requirements. The verification testing of the photometric performance of the lamps and luminaires are based on sophisticated technical skills and are conducted with state-of-the-art equipment, such as type C goniophotometers for photometric detection, which are able to verify the distribution of lumen intensity in the C-g or V-H system and integrating spheres for the evaluation of the Spectral Power Distribution (SPD), Color Rendering Index (CRI), Color Correlated Temperature (CCT), chromatic coordinates and all other parameters necessary for the definition of luminaires’ characteristics.
