  • Concept Design – Creatively exploring solutions to the Brief

Concept design is about translating, exploring and resolving the design brief – turning an idea scribbled on a napkin into a believable, viable and usable product. Firstly, the problem is examined and a range of possible solutions are explored. We make educated decisions on the best design options through cycles of research, innovation, sketching and evaluation strategies. During the concept design, we will focus specifically on the overall styling and functional details of the product. We will carry out rapid, foam model studies to test basic ergonomics and aesthetics. We will then model simple versions in 3D CAD to test the basic layout and functional geometry. We will often conclude this stage with a visual concept presentation and some indicative manufacturing costs. You then review with us what we’ve created, our recommendations and how these fit with the brief, so that together we can choose a winning direction to go into the development design…

  • Product Design Development – Beginning to get reality into the design

In stage 3 we will continue to model in CAD to refine the fit, form and function of the parts, in order to meet the product specification. This stage will start to bring all aspects of the design together: the aesthetic, the mechanical and the electronic. We will liaise closely with the electronics team to ensure a seamless fit between the product and the electronic components. Attention will also be paid to general manufacturing details, such as assembly and disassembly, finding good potential components to use and material selection. Finally, aesthetic options for colors, textures and finishes will be decided. This stage will culminate in the creation of a final product presentation, and the necessary CAD data, to proceed towards prototyping.

  • Product Prototyping – Test, improve, verify and convince

Before committing to any form of manufacturing, it is strongly advised that you produce a range of prototypes. This can be an appearance prototype, to test the size, style, and look and feel. Alternatively, a quick test rig will focus on the fit and function of specific mechanisms and features. A final working prototype is the closest you will get to the real thing; looking great and interfacing beautifully with the electronic and mechanical components needed. We can produce prototypes to mimic any material, any color and finish through a variety of processes. We can also select processes to work within specific budgets.

  • Design for Manufacture – Finalizing the design and handing over to production

Once the prototype is proven, the final stage is to optimize the CAD for manufacture. We often make a few final adjustments based on recommendations from the chosen toolmakers and manufacturers. The final output will be the engineering drawings and documentation. This will act as the ‘contractual agreement’ between you and the manufacturer.
