PRODUCT DESIGN CONSULTANCY – GET TO KNOW IT’S BENEFITS

August 26, 2016

BemStudio’s product design consultancy has the insight to captivate a target audience with design style and brand value. We support this with a full complement of physical and intellectual verification tools. We’ve developed techniques for addressing these issues and maintaining accurate communications with our clients and subcontractors. Our methodology bypasses the traditional blockages and allows for an open exchange of information and the freedom to allow creativity to flourish.

Product design consultancy is about understanding the end user, questioning existing ways of doing things and seeing opportunities for innovative products that will enrich quality of life.

Let us guide you on how our product design consultancy process works:

  • Briefing & Investigation – Finding what your customers want and discovering brand new opportunities

Taking time to understand everything the product must do is an often overlooked but essential part of getting it right. We generally start with your business requirements, mapping out your brand values, probing marketing and sales strategies and investigating similar and competing products. Then we conduct visits and interviews with potential users to see how they might interface with the object, the environmental conditions it may face and requirements for its functionality. We can also deal with any IP related tasks such as patent or trademark searches. Finally, we translate all this into the design brief, a concrete and clear set of guidance we can agree now before launching into the investigation and concept design…

  • Concept Design – Creatively exploring solutions to the Brief

Concept design is about translating, exploring and resolving the design brief – turning an idea scribbled on a napkin into a believable, viable and usable product. Firstly, the problem is examined and a range of possible solutions are explored. We make educated decisions on the best design options through cycles of research, innovation, sketching and evaluation strategies. During the concept design, we will focus specifically on the overall styling and functional details of the product. We will carry out rapid, foam model studies to test basic ergonomics and aesthetics. We will then model simple versions in 3D CAD to test the basic layout and functional geometry. We will often conclude this stage with a visual concept presentation and some indicative manufacturing costs. You then review with us what we’ve created, our recommendations and how these fit with the brief, so that together we can choose a winning direction to go into the development design…

  • Product Design Development – Beginning to get reality into the design

In stage 3 we will continue to model in CAD to refine the fit, form and function of the parts, in order to meet the product specification. This stage will start to bring all aspects of the design together: the aesthetic, the mechanical and the electronic. We will liaise closely with the electronics team to ensure a seamless fit between the product and the electronic components. Attention will also be paid to general manufacturing details, such as assembly and disassembly, finding good potential components to use and material selection. Finally, aesthetic options for colors, textures and finishes will be decided. This stage will culminate in the creation of a final product presentation, and the necessary CAD data, to proceed towards prototyping.

  • Product Prototyping – Test, improve, verify and convince

Before committing to any form of manufacturing, it is strongly advised that you produce a range of prototypes. This can be an appearance prototype, to test the size, style, and look and feel. Alternatively, a quick test rig will focus on the fit and function of specific mechanisms and features. A final working prototype is the closest you will get to the real thing; looking great and interfacing beautifully with the electronic and mechanical components needed. We can produce prototypes to mimic any material, any color and finish through a variety of processes. We can also select processes to work within specific budgets.

  • Design for Manufacture – Finalizing the design and handing over to production

Once the prototype is proven, the final stage is to optimize the CAD for manufacture. We often make a few final adjustments based on recommendations from the chosen toolmakers and manufacturers. The final output will be the engineering drawings and documentation. This will act as the ‘contractual agreement’ between you and the manufacturer. Realize has strong tools and experience in branding and producing marketing support material such as websites and packaging. In addition, we provide illustrations for design registration applications and the user manuals.

Here is what you can expect from BemStudio’s Product Design Consultancy:

  • Connecting product development to customer – Our aim to create products which really inspire and connect with the end customer. The customer is at the center of our product development process. In depth understanding of the customer through research delivers the design direction needed to connect.

  • Human centered – Our work is about humanizing technology; putting the user at the heart of innovation drives technology towards better products.

  • Added Functionality – Improving or enhancing the functionality of your product can make it more useful and can give it the edge over the competition.

  • Drive down manufacturing and production costs – Getting involved early in the product development, we can help ‘design out’ costly parts and manufacturing processes. This can have a huge impact down the line towards reducing production costs.

Summing up, BemStudio’s product design consultancy provides a one-stop product development service for you to take your product to market, from advising on business cases and creating initial concepts through to design and development; from manufacture and supply chain set-up to ongoing support for lasting success.
